A sign maker doesn't just make a sign. They design the shopfront as a whole, choose materials that hold up outdoors, size the lighting, prepare the permit application and install. In Paris, it is this last part that makes the difference between a project that gets done and a project that drags on.

Prior authorisation: the real critical path

Any installation or modification of a sign requires prior authorisation. The application is filed online with the City of Paris via its terraces, displays and signs e-service, and the statutory processing time is two months for a permanent sign. On top of that, you need the written consent of the building owner, as required by the French Environmental Code.

The applicable framework combines the Environmental Code and the Paris Local Advertising Regulations, which divide the city into zones with different rules. The same sign can be accepted in one arrondissement and refused two streets away. That is why we check the zoning before we design, not afterwards.

Night-time switch-off

An illuminated sign must be switched off between 1 am and 6 am once the business has closed. Illuminated advertising displays are subject to a stricter rule, from 11:45 pm to 6 am. Non-compliance is penalised. A programmable timer fitted on installation day settles the matter for good.

Manufacture and installation
