What is window film?

Definition. Window film, vitrophanie in French, is a printed, cut or frosted adhesive film applied to a glass surface to decorate it, carry a message, make it visible or provide privacy. The French word first meant a label that could be read through the glass. It now covers every film applied to shop windows, partitions and windows.

In other words, window film is visual communication applied to glazing: printed, cut or frosted adhesive films applied to your shop windows, façades, partitions and glazed walls. It is the trade term for turning a glass surface into a medium: brand message, opacity, safety markings, decoration or protection.

In practice, window film can be cut lettering on a shopfront, a full-format print on a shop window, a frosted band on an office partition, or one-way vision film that shows an image on the street side while keeping the view of the pavement from inside. The surface changes, the logic stays the same: we start from the use, choose the film, make it to measure and install it cleanly.

Vitrophanie: etymology and exact meaning

The Larousse dictionary treats vitrophanie as a feminine noun and defines it as a self-adhesive label applied to a pane of glass and read through it. That is the original meaning: a graphic stuck on the inside, printed in reverse, read from the street.

The word goes back further. Wikipedia, under vitrauphanie, describes it as a 19th-century coinage from vitre or vitrail (window pane, stained glass) and the Greek root phanos, which conveys clarity. Vitrauphanies were then imitation stained glass printed by chromolithography and stuck to apartment windows, giving the effect of stained glass without replacing the pane.

Vitrophanie or vitrauphanie? Both spellings exist. Vitrophanie has become the trade term, and its meaning has broadened: it is now used for any adhesive film applied to glazing, whether it is read through the glass, seen from both sides or simply used to block the view.

Window film, adhesive film, sticker, solar film, sandblasting: the differences

These five terms come up in quotes and searches. They do not mean the same thing.

TermWhat it isReversible
Window film (vitrophanie)An adhesive film applied to glass to decorate, inform, signpost or provide privacy. It is a use, defined by the substrate: glass.Yes, the film comes off
Adhesive filmThe material: a vinyl or polyester film coated with adhesive. It is used for window film but also for walls, floors and vehicles.Depends on the adhesive
StickerA cut self-adhesive graphic, often small, for any surface. A sticker on glass is window film; a giant sticker on a wall is a wall graphic.Yes
Solar filmA technical film that deals with heat, glare or UV. Its performance is on the manufacturer's data sheet, not in a visual.Yes
SandblastingAn abrasive treatment of the glass itself, making it permanently translucent. Frosted film imitates the effect without touching the glass. No, the glass is altered

In practice: for the look of sandblasted glass without making it permanent, choose frosted film; to bring a room's temperature down, choose solar film; for a decoration or message on the glass, choose printed or cut window film.

How to remove window film

Heat the film with a heat gun or hairdryer to soften the adhesive, lift a corner and pull slowly, keeping the film flat, reheating as you go. Adhesive residue comes off with a suitable cleaner and a squeegee. On coated, laminated or treated glass, only plastic tools are used.

How easily a film comes off is decided when it is ordered: a campaign film is chosen with an adhesive that removes cleanly, an office film with one made to last. It is one of the questions we ask before recommending a film, and the reason we also handle removal.

Window film does not start with a film

It starts with a situation. A partition that is too transparent, a shopfront to stage, a circulation to make more legible, an identity to bring into the space or a privacy need to clarify.

Paristic helps you choose an answer suited to the glazing, the use and the level of transformation you are after. We do not promise an automatic effect: we clarify the need, the limits, the substrate and the installation conditions.

The main uses

Nos SOLUTIONS

Offices and glass partitions

Create a visual separation, address a privacy question, mark a glass wall or bring the company identity into the space. Daytime privacy, blackout and real confidentiality are not synonyms: the choice depends on the film, the light, the viewing angle and the use.

Shopfronts and retail

Give a shopfront presence, support a campaign, work a season or treat a surface without confusing visibility, message and sales promise. Installation and removal must be planned with the operation of the store.

Decoration and customisation

Frosted, sandblasted, printed, lettering, cut-outs, perforated and solar films can answer different situations. The exact material, durability, resistance and thermal effects depend on the product, the glazing, the exposure and the manufacturer data sheet.

How to choose the right solution?

1. The use

Privacy, wayfinding, decoration, campaign, visual separation, solar protection or brand message: the same word can cover different needs.

2. The substrate

Type of glazing, dimensions, joints, access, surface condition, exposure and cleaning constraints must be known before production.

3. Reversibility

A campaign shopfront may call for installation and removal. An office solution can be designed to last longer. Removal and maintenance are prepared from the start.

Our method

  1. Qualification

Use, site, photos and plans, survey if needed.

  2. Recommendation

Film and installation principle suited to the substrate.

  3. Mockup and proof

Projection on your glazing, approval before production.

  4. Coordinated production

Printing, cutting and preparation of the elements.

  5. Installation

    Site protection, installation, cleaning.

  6. Handover

Check and handover within the agreed scope.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is window film (vitrophanie)?

Window film, vitrophanie in French, is a printed, cut or frosted adhesive film applied to a glass surface to decorate it, carry a message, make it visible or provide privacy. The French word first meant a label that could be read through the glass; it now covers every film applied to shop windows, partitions and windows.

What is a vitrauphanie?

It is the other spelling of vitrophanie, and historically the first. The word was coined in the 19th century from vitre or vitrail (window pane, stained glass) and the Greek root phanos, which conveys clarity. It then meant imitation stained glass printed by chromolithography and stuck to windows; both spellings now mean the same thing, an adhesive decoration applied to glass.

How do you remove window film?

Heat the film with a heat gun or hairdryer to soften the adhesive, lift a corner and pull slowly and flat, reheating as you go. Adhesive residue comes off with a suitable cleaner and a squeegee. On coated or treated glass, only plastic tools are used. A quality film, properly installed, comes off without marking the glass.

What are the rules on window film in France?

On a shopfront, a film visible from the street and relating to the business can count as a sign under the French Environment Code (article L581-3); signs on a shopfront may not exceed 15% of the commercial façade, 25% if it is under 50 m² (article R581-63), and local advertising rules can be stricter, as in Paris. In offices, the French Labour Code requires markings at eye level on transparent walls and doors (articles R4214-6 and R4224-22).

Is window film suitable for offices?

Yes, it can treat glass partitions, rooms and circulations, after checking the use and the substrate.

What is the difference between frosted and blackout?

A frosted film diffuses view and light in a given way; a blackout film aims at a stronger reduction of visibility. The result depends on the product and the conditions.

Does window film guarantee confidentiality?

No, not by principle. Daytime privacy, blackout and confidentiality must be distinguished according to angles, light and the chosen film.

Can a film be customised?

Yes, depending on the technique: printing, cutting, lettering or composition, to be confirmed after studying the substrate.

Can it be installed on a campaign shopfront?

Yes, if installation, removal, substrate and intervention hours are prepared.

How long does a film last?

It depends on the product, the glazing, the exposure and the maintenance conditions. No general duration can be stated without the manufacturer data sheet.

Does installation require a survey?

Photos and dimensions may be enough for a first qualification. A survey is planned when dimensions or constraints are decisive.

Do you work in Paris?

Projects in Paris can be qualified from the address, the type of site and the access constraints. The area actually served and feasibility are confirmed project by project.

How do I ask for a recommendation?

Send the city, the use, a few photos, approximate dimensions and known constraints through the form.
